I told someone Gus was "28 in dog years." They said "that's not how it works." I said "times 7, everyone knows that." They said "no, that's not how it works." I said "what do you mean that's not how it works." They said "read the Cell Systems paper." I said "I'm not reading a scientific paper at a brewery." I read the scientific paper. It was 2 AM. I was not at a brewery.

Year 1: The Myth
I adopted Gus in July 2022. He was a puppy. I told everyone he was 7 in dog years. People nodded. I felt smart. I was not smart. I was repeating a myth invented by people who didn't want to do math.
Year 2: The Doubt
Gus turned 2. I said he was 14. A friend said "actually, the first two years are more like 15 and 24." I said "what." She said "it's logarithmic." I said "I don't know what that means." I googled it. I found conflicting information. I made a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet had three columns. None of them agreed.
Year 3: The Paper

Year 4: The Truth
Gus is 4. The old formula says 28. The new formula says 53. Fifty-three. Gus is 53 in human years. He's a middle-aged man who naps a lot and dreams about tater tots. This makes more sense than 28. 28-year-olds don't nap this much. 28-year-olds don't get excited about green beans. 53-year-olds do. I know 53-year-olds. They are Gus.

The multiply-by-7 rule is wrong. It's been wrong for decades. Everyone knows it. Everyone uses it anyway. Because it's easy. Because 4 times 7 is 28 and you can do that in your head while you're at the dog park. Because the real formula requires a calculator and a willingness to accept that your 4-year-old dog is middle-aged.

Large dogs age faster. This is the part that really hurts. Gus is a golden retriever. He's large. After year 2, large dogs age faster than small dogs. A 4-year-old chihuahua is about 35 in human years. A 4-year-old golden retriever is about 53. The size matters. The breed matters. The math is complicated. Life is complicated. Dogs are simple. They don't know they're 53. They just know they're hungry.

I know that Gus is 53. I know that he has maybe 8 good years left. I know that I need to stop googling dog lifespan statistics at 2 AM. I know that I won't.

I told my mom that Gus is 53. She said "that's not right, he's only 4." I said "that's the point." She didn't understand. I don't blame her. I didn't understand either. Not until I spent three hours with a scientific paper and a calculator and a spreadsheet that made me cry. The spreadsheet is still open. Tab 3. Gus's life timeline. It's mostly green. There's some yellow. There's a little red at the end. I don't look at the red.

Gus is currently asleep on the couch. He's dreaming. I can tell because his paws are twitching. He's probably chasing a squirrel. In his dream, he's 28. In reality, he's 53. In both versions, he's happy. That's what matters. That's the only thing that matters. The math is just math. The dog is just a dog. The love is real. The love doesn't need a formula.

But the formula helps. It helps me understand what stage he's in. It helps me know when to start joint supplements. It helps me know when to switch to senior food. It helps me prepare. Not for the end. Just for the next stage. The mature stage. The stage where he still runs but not as fast. The stage where he still plays but naps longer. The stage where he's still Gus. Just a slightly older Gus. A Gus who is 53 and doesn't know it. A Gus who is perfect.
